Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah is the proud supporter of the Royal Institute for British Architecture (RIBA) Exhibition which is being hosted by us from the 7th – 25th April 2018 at the Amricani Cultural Centre.

The UNDP/DAI Exhibition Wrap-up, with a Visit to the Amricani Cultural Centre

The UNDP/DAI creating an exhibition wrapped up today with a visit to the Amricani Cultural Centre. Dr Christian Robin opened the session with a final review of South Arabian inscriptions on rocks and objects. He was followed by Dr Roberto Fabbri (UDEM), who led the participants through the ‘Splendors of the Ancient East’ exhibition. As the group moved through the galleries, Fabbri explained why the objects were presented as they were. The session ended with the presentation of certificates by UNDP Resident Representative Hideko Hadzialic and DAI Director General Sheikha Hussa Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah.

At the invitation of the First Lady of Armenia Mrs. Nouneh Sarkissian, Sheikha Hussa Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah, accompanied by H.E . Ambassador Sarmen Baghdasarian and a delegation from Kuwait, left this morning to Yerevan. The delegation includes Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts, and Letters (NCCAL), Mr. Kamel AbdulJalil, NCCAL Assistant Secretary-General Dr. Tahani alAdwani; a group of Dar al Athar al-Islamiyyah ( DAI ) Steering Committee Members, including Sheikha Moudhi S. al-Sabah, Mr. Bader al Baijan, Mrs, Khaireyah Husain, Prof. Faisal Alkhanderi, Prof. Abdulhadi al-Ajmi, and from The al-Sabah Collection, Curator Salam Kaoukji, Director of Education Dr. Susan Day, MD of Gulf Museum Consultancy, Mrs. Katherine Baker, and Director of Dar al-Funoon in Kuwait, Ms. Lucy Topalian. The purpose of the trip is to meet with officials in Armenia to discuss the hosting of an exhibition from DAI in Yerevan.

During their visit, officials from Kuwait and Armenia agreed to start an exchange of Cultural activities between the two countries starting by hosting an Armenian cultural week in Kuwait in December this year to be followed by an exhibition from Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah to be exhibited in Yerevan in June 2020.

Furūsiyya: Birth and spread of an aristocratic culture in the medieval Middle East

Abbés Zouache
Historian Abbes Zouache is a specialist in the history of the medieval Middle East, as well as in Arabic codicology.
A permanent Research Fellow at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), he is the current Director of the French Center for Archaeology and Social Sciences, a regional research centre based in Kuwait conducting research in the Arabian Peninsula as a whole. Furūsiyya: Birth and spread of an aristocratic culture in the medieval Middle East
Furūsiyya is often associated with equestrian arts. However, it was linked with everything related to warfare, from hunting to mounted martial games and recipes for Greek fire, as it is shown by the great number of preserved furūsiyya treatise. The treaties show that the furūsiyya was a culture, born in the early Middle Age with the establishment of the Abbasid caliphate, and inspired by Arab, Greek, Sassanid and Central Asiatic traditions. This lecture will present these manuscripts and a culture that spread all over the medieval Middle East, that was gradually disseminated in various forms, especially in the Arabian Peninsula.

Salman Al-Ammari is a Kuwaiti folk artist, a vocalist and Oud player. He is an admirer of old Kuwaiti sounds, folklore and the Sea Music, influenced by vocalists and famous old Kuwaiti singers such as Hamad Khalifa, Mohammed Zuwaid, Mohammed Bin Fares and Dahi Bin Walid.

Dr. Sheila Canby former curator of Islamic art at the British Museum and the Metropolitan museum is giving the workshop for trainees from NCCAL and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah.

A group from the US Army – Camp Arifjan visited the American Cultural Centre

A group from the US Army – Camp Arifjan visited the American Cultural Centre to introduce new members to the ancient history of Kuwait as well as the beginning of American-Kuwaiti relationship through the American Missionary Hospital, which began in 1913 which was established by Americans.
